Best Practices - Educational Campuses

School campuses can be a challenge but also a ton of fun. Over the years we have photographed a lot of schools. From large urban college campuses to single structure rural elementary schools, we have done it all. We start by asking if your firm wants students and people in the images. This can greatly affect when we photograph. Some of our past projects have taken place with real students during a normal school day, some have been when the schools are closed and using either no models or models provided by the client or the school. Either way, preparation is the key to success.
Most folks that work at a school have never been involved in architectural photoshoots and have no idea what it involves. The first step is to work with the administrators in place to ease their mind and let them know what our plan is. The earlier we begin reaching out to a school the better. We have to plan around school activities and holidays as they typically cover the walls in decorations that can really hinder our production. Being respectful of the students, teachers and the learning environment is very important. When we are asked to photograph a “live” classroom we try to be as unobtrusive as possible.
Making sure that everyone on campus is aware of our goal and plan is key. Teachers and faculty always want advanced notice so that their spaces are ready to be photographed. There are many times where there are students who opt out of being photographed and we have to be respectful to everyone on campus. Working with facilities crew to make sure we have access to spaces when we need it is also crucial. Being prepared, working with the end goal in mind and having a solid plan make photographing a school campus run smoothly.
